Mariemont City Schools established the Global and Cultural Perspectives Committee in 2015 with the aim to increase knowledge and understanding of global competency and culturally proficient practices and combat these issues happening in the world and within our own schools and community.
The vision of the Global and Cultural Perspectives Committee is to build an equitable, inclusive and responsive learning community that values the dignity and uniqueness of all students, staff and members of the community.
The Global and Cultural Perspectives Committee includes administrators, staff, a board of education member and community members. The members of the Global and Cultural Perspectives Committee have spent five years meeting, examining, reflecting and learning about the cultural proficiency continuum and the action steps to move the district collectively up the continuum and into a more culturally proficient space.
The Global and Cultural Perspectives Committee has organized and led building-level committees at each school, growing the number of staff members directly involved in this work and creating dialogue amongst colleagues to find and correct inequitable and insensitive practices within our schools. Additionally, the committee has held focus groups with students and staff to learn more about the strengths and gaps in the school district with equality, inclusiveness and responsiveness.
The Global and Cultural Perspectives Committee has led professional development sessions for all staff members at various Mariemont Academy days over the past five years, during which it has asked all staff members to:
- Become aware of any cultural biases they may hold;
- Model compassion to each and every student, parent, coworker and community member they interact with;
- Teach tolerance to students and demonstrate tolerance with their actions;
- Be an active Upstander – stop unacceptable language and jargon when they hear it;
- Ask questions.
