The Mariemont High School spring athletics teams continue to garner success with two teams and an individual competing for a state title this weekend.

 

The baseball team finished the season with a 6-8 record and earned a spot in the district semifinal. Senior Andrew Glassmeyer (OF) and juniors Quinn Benner (P) and Michael Napolitano (C) were named to the All-Cincinnati Hills League (CHL) First Team while Senior Tyler Tritsch (IF), junior Max Miller (OF) and sophomore JD Long (P) picked up Second Team honors and senior Nick Jones and sophomore Bryan Miller were named All-CHL Honorable Mention.

 

Benner led all pitchers in the league with 54 strikeouts while Napolitano and Tritsch were each in the top-5 of RBIs with 28 and 25, respectively.

 

The boys lacrosse team made its fourth straight appearance in the OHSAA Boys Lacrosse Final Four and will be playing in the championship game for the third time on Saturday. The team beat Bishop Watterson 11-8 in the semifinal on Wednesday night and will face Chagrin Falls in the title game at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 5, at Ohio Wesleyan University’s Selby Stadium. The team is seeing its second state championship title after winning it all in 2017.

 

The Warriors are an offensive juggernaut with four different players ranked among the CHL’s top-5 in offensive statistics. Junior Max Tepe leads the league with 66 goals while junior Boden Gall is third with 47. Gall also ranks second with 32 assists while senior Seth Greene has won a league-leading 173 draw controls and senior Mac McLelland has won 99, good for fourth.

 

 

The girls lacrosse team also will be playing for a state championship title on Saturday, facing off against Rocky River at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 5, at Ohio Wesleyan University’s Selby Stadium. The Warriors are making their third trip to the OHSAA girls lacrosse Final Four and it playing for a state title for the second time after winning in 2018.

 

The Warriors dominate the CHL stat rankings, led by senior Marley Megowen who is first in caused turnovers (30), second in assists (41), second in draw controls (84) and third in goals (61). Additionally, senior Marah Campbell is fourth in goals (57), junior Delaine Oliveira is fourth in draw controls (59) and second in interceptions (7), senior Sophie Toman is fifth in draw controls (52) and senior Olivia Simpson is fourth in saves (68).

 

** NOTE ** - In the four years that the OHSAA has had lacrosse as a state-recognized sport, Mariemont is only the second high school to have both the boys and girls teams playing for a DII state title in the same year. Chagrin Falls did it in 2019.

 

Collectively, the boys tennis team finished the season with an 11-3 overall record and a 3-1 mark in the CHL. Junior Will Glassmeyer and sophomore Will Stephens earned First Team CHL accolades while senior R.J. Howe and junior Wiley Whitmore were Second Team honorees. Freshman Ryan Glassmeyer was named to the honorable mention list.

 

Stephens, Will Glassmeyer and Whitmore each qualified for the district tournament in singles competition while Stephens advanced to play in the OHSAA state championship at the Lindner Family Tennis Center.

 

Mariemont senior Kiersten Souders will compete for a state championship this weekend in the 100m hurdles event. She will run the prelims on Friday, June 4, at 2:30 p.m. at Westerville North High School in Columbus. The top nine athletes in the event will advance to the final round.

 

Souders earned First Team CHL honors and was joined on the first team by the 1600m relay team of junior Marley Valentine, sophomore Caroline Soller and freshmen Brooke Cole and Margaret Grisemer. On the boys side, First Team honors went to sophomore Bennett Turan in the 3200m run and the 3200m relay team of Turan and juniors Martin Eisenhauer, Sam Beeler and Henry Buck. Eisenhauer (800m run), Beeler (3200m run) and junior Griffen Wilner (high jump) earned CHL honorable mention nods.
