Mariemont High School Inducts Five into the Kusel Hall of Fame

HOF inductees with Jim Renner, Tom Nerl and Steve Estepp

The Mariemont High School Athletic Department will induct five individuals into the school’s Doc Kusel Athletic Hall of Fame at halftime of the Norwood at Mariemont football game on August 30, 2024.
 
Michael Miller (’07) earned 7 varsity letters in football and lacrosse. A four-year letterwinner for Tom Crosby’s football Warriors, Miller earned First Team All-Cincinnati Hills League (CHL) and All-City honors as a junior, and Second Team honors as a sophomore and a senior. His junior season saw him rush for 1,213 yards and 178 tackling points. He finished his football career with 2,569 yards. In Lacrosse, Miller earned Second Team All-State recognition as a sophomore and a senior.
 
Drake Peterson (’08) collected 7 varsity letters in football and lacrosse. Peterson was a starter in the defensive backfield for three seasons and a member of the 100 point tackling club. In lacrosse, where he gathered four varsity letters as a starter, Peterson was a two-time captain, including the 2007 State Championship team. At the completion of his senior season, Peterson was the all-time leading scorer in the Mariemont boys lacrosse program.
 
Erica Franke Whittenburg (’08) was a three-sport athlete for the Warriors during her athletic career in volleyball, basketball and track and field. In volleyball, Franke earned First Team All-CHL and First Team All-City recognition in her junior and senior seasons. On the hardwood for Coach John Jones’ Warriors, Franke was named First Team All-CHL and All-City during her senior season after picking up Second Team honors as a junior. On the track, Franke qualified for the OHSAA Championship with the Warriors 4x400m relay team. That 4x400 relay team was CHL and District Champions in the event. Franke was also a First Team All-CHL honoree in the 300m hurdles, Second Team All-CHL in the 100m high hurdles, and Honorable Mention All-CHL in the high jump.
 
Danny Renner (’14) represented the Warriors in football, basketball and baseball over his career. For the football Warriors, Renner started three seasons as a defensive back and was First Team All-CHL and All-District as a junior. His senior season saw Renner gather First Team All-CHL and All-District, as well as Honorable Mention All-Ohio. He finished his career second in all time tackles. In baseball, Renner collected Second Team and Honorable Mention All-CHL honors as an outfielder.
 
Leah Dupre (’16) was a four-year leader in for Coach Kevin Maness’ Water Warriors. Dupre’s senior season was capped with a State Championship in the 100 Breaststroke. She was named the Cincinnati Enquirer D2 Swimmer of the Year, 100 Breaststroke All-American and 200 Freestyle All American. She finished as OHSAA runner-up in the 200 Medley Relay, OHSAA runner-up in the 200 Freestyle Relay and 11th place State 200 Individual Medley.  As a junior, Dupre placed 3rd at the State Championship in the 100 Breaststroke, 10th place in the 200 Individual Medley and runner-up in the 200 Medley Relay.  Dupre was named All-City in the 100 Breaststroke and 200 Medley Relay, and Honorable Mention All-City in the 200 Individual Medley. Dupre finished 5th at the state championship meet in the 100 Breaststroke as a sophomore and a freshman, while gaining CHL and District championships throughout her career.
