Mr. Schmidt lied about his age and enlisted in the Marine Corps when he was only 16 years old. He did his basic training at Paris Island and then his infantry training at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He put in for Army school and was sent to Fort Belvoir, Virginia. There he learned map making and telegraphing among other things. He then went to China aboard the USS Mayfield and then to Guam. In 1950 he was sent to Camp Pendleton. He was a corporal then. When the Korean War broke out, he volunteered to go there. Because of his Military Operations Specialty training, he was assigned to a recon unit and did observation work. He was involved in Pusan, the Inchon Landing invasion, and the battle at Chosin Reservoir. He achieved the rank of Sergeant. |
