Mr. Gerhard was serving with Merchant Marine companies before he enlisted in the Navy.  He was a 1st Lieutenant on the AKA and then an executive officer on an LST 827.  He went to Sasebo, Japan carrying supplies.  He also served in Alaska carrying supplies to the men working on the International Dew Line.  Mr. Gerhard achieved the rank of Lieutenant JG.
