Mr. Bowers had a very distinguished career in the United States Army. He served in A company of the 229th Aviation Battalion, 3rd Brigade and 1st Cavalry Division. He was a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant. He spent 1 year in Germany and then 10 months of flight school where he made the rank of Captain and was sent to Vietnam. He chose to fly helicopters. After 6 months in the 1st Cavalry Division, he spent 4 weeks in Saigon, 3 weeks in Danang, and 3 months in Can Tho, to the south. He flew mainly 2 types of missions: combat assault and logistics mission. Occasionally, he would fly out at night dropping flares or on a "sniffer" mission with a device that tested for ammonia from human sweat to find enemy soldiers. After his time in Vietnam, he went to the Armor Officer Advanced Course and then 2 years at Princeton University to study aeronautical engineering. He was a flight test engineer with the Army Flight Test Agency at Edwards Air Force Base in California during his last 2 years of active duty. He had 28 years total service in the military. Mr. Bowers achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He received a Bronze Star, Air Medal with 23 clusters, Army Commendation Medal, Legion of Merit, Reserve Commendation Medal, RVN Campaign Medal, and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry. |
