Mr. Mullenger was drafted into the Army Air Corps in 1943. H went to Miami Beach, Florida for his basic training and then to Amarillo, Texas for 9 months of mechanical training. From there he received training on the B17 at the Boeing Aircraft Plant. He was assigned as a ball turret gunner and then t o the top ball turret. He flew in 35 missions and achieved the rank of Tech Sergeant. While flying over Frankfurt, Germany, they were hit and he was wounded in the eye by plastic from the turret. Mr. Mullenger received the Purple Heart Medal, Air Medal with 5 Clusters, American Theater Medal, E.T.O. with 3 Battle Stars, Good Conduct Medal, and Gunner Wings. |
