The Mariemont City School District selected a new band director to begin in the summer prior to the 2017-18 school year. James Galloway has over 14 years of teaching and directing experience, including most recently as assistant band director at Anderson High School in the Forest Hills School District, where he co-directed a 14-time state qualifying competition marching band program; managed and directed two elementary school beginning band programs, while increasing participation to over 80 beginners annually; created three new ensembles within the instrumental program; implemented a percussion class curriculum concept within the district’s band program; and held the position of director of the top, audition-only jazz band ensemble.
“We are thrilled to welcome Mr. Galloway to our school and community. His talent and expertise, along with his energy and enthusiasm, are a perfect fit for our students and our community,” said Steven Estepp, superintendent of Mariemont City Schools. “The future of the music program is in good hands with Mr. Galloway, and I look forward to seeing our students thrive under his direction.”
Prior to his work in the Forest Hills School District, Galloway was director of university pep bands at Morehead State University. He also currently teaches middle and high school-level students the fundamentals of playing the trumpet as a private trumpet teacher.
Presently, he is the Ohio Music Education Association district XIV honor band chair, as well as past secretary/treasurer for OMEA district XIV. Galloway is a recipient of Morehead State University Music Department’s Helen Fulbright Award for Excellence in Music Education.
He graduated summa cum laude from Morehead State University with a bachelor's degree in music education. Galloway also obtained his master’s degree in music education from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
“Mariemont City Schools is known for being a school district of excellence, locally, statewide and nationally, and I am humbled at the opportunity to become the district’s next band director,” said Galloway. “I look forward to building upon the district's strong foundation of valuing and celebrating our accomplishments while setting high standards that I know we can achieve together.”
The process to select the district’s next band director included several rounds of interviews, which involved staff, administrators, parents and students. The Mariemont Board of Education officially voted on the recommendation of James Galloway as the district’s band director at the May board meeting.
James resides in Anderson Township with his wife and three children. He is an avid runner, having completed one full Flying Pig marathon and five Flying Pig half marathons.
