Mariemont High School Girls Swimming Team Wins NISCA National Championship
The Mariemont High School girls swimming team wrapped up its successful 2017-18 campaign by being crowned the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association (NISCA) National Dual Meet Champion. It makes the third consecutive season that the Mariemont girls swimming team has earned the accolade.
The National Dual Meet Team competition ranks teams from across the country with their best times of the season. Teams are allowed to enter three individual times and two relay times per event and each event has a corresponding point allotment for the time entered. The NISCA divides the teams into classes according to their public/private designation and their student body population. Mariemont competed in Class 5 for public schools with less than 900 students.
The Warriors won the class with 4,834 total points, more than 300 points above the runners-up). The Mariemont boys swimming team finished ninth in the nation with 3,409 points.
In addition to the national championship competition, the NISCA also sponsors an All-America program which recognizes the top 100 swimmers nationally in each event, regardless of the public/private designation or size of school. Mariemont’s Cora Dupre, who won two state championship titles in the 50 and 100 freestyle events, was a four-time NISCA All-American by finishing seventh in the 100 freestyle, 11th in the 50 freestyle, 50th in the 100 backstroke and 30th in the 400 freestyle relay where she was joined by fellow All-American teammates Brooke Woellert, Lainey Newman and Kate Overbey.
In the boy’s competition, Ian Mikesell landed just off the All-America list, finishing 101st in the 100 breaststroke.
