Marie Hawk was born in 1903 in Harrison, Ohio. She graduated from high
school at 16 years of age. Two years later she attended college and
graduated from University of Cincinnati. Influenced by her brother who
was a school principal, she decided on a teaching career.
One
of the first teachers hired by the Mariemont Company in 1924, Marie
taught first grade in the two-room temporary school building at the
corner of Beech Street and Wooster Pike. She was one of four teachers
who taught the two classes of pupils from Fairfax. She was just 21 years
old and her monthly salary was around $90. She and her 14 students would
taker their lunches over to the churchyard and watch the construction of
Mariemont Church and Dale park School. The following year she taught
fifth grade at the newly completed Dale Park Elementary School.
On New Year’s Eve 1926 the Community Club organized a
dinner meeting at the Mariemont Inn and there she met E. Boyd Jordan,
and attorney. The following Christmas Day they were the first couple to
be married at the Mariemont Community Church. They were both involved in
Church activities and E. Boyd Jordan became the musical director. For
many years they lived at Lytle Woods Place. In 1941 Mr. Jordan became
the first Mayor of Mariemont and it was the first Village Meeting that
Mars. Jordan came up with the suggestion of calling it the Town Meeting,
and appointing a Town Crier.
