- The course is designed to improve reading, writing, and study skills. Texts available are
Learning and Study Skills, Reading and Understanding Short Stories, Reading Drills, Timed Readings in Literature. Students may also use newspaper and magazine articles, various library resources, vocabulary materials, proficiency practice materials, or their own classroom reading and writing assignments. If the class is small enough, instruction may be individualized to focus on building the particular skills each student may need.

- Grades are based on daily checks of student plan books, weekly timed reading quizzes, and various brief quizzes on any text material used. The course is not designed to burden the student with additional homework, but to enable him to better accomplish reading and writing tasks in
all classes. The exam is based on comprehension of and written response to readings presented on the exam.
