March Homework

Dear Parents,
Here are some activities for you to do at home this month to reinforce
what we are doing in the classroom.
Coins:
1. Place a small amount of pennies, nickels, dimes on the table. Have your child identify each coin and how you count it, i.e. by ones, fives, tens.
2. Show your child 1 nickel and 2 pennies. Have him/her count the value of the coins. Please make sure the answer ends with the word "cents". Repeat several times with varying amounts of coins.
3. Give your child some coins. Ask, "How could you make 12 cents?, 7cents, 30 cents? etc.
4. Set up a shop. We play "Mrs. Bobbitt's Pet Shop" in the classroom.
I will draw 5-6 animals on the chalkboard with a price ranging from 2cents to 8 cents. I give the children a cup of coins with 1 dime, 2 nickels, and 9 pennies. We then shop. I will say, "Mrs. Hendricks would like to buy 1 cat and 1 turtle. How much money will she need to pay?" The kids need to read the price of each animal and show the correct amount of change needed for purchase. I will often say, "There is more than one way to pay for these."
