Playdough (my favorite recipe)

1/2 cup salt
1 1/2 cup boiling water
2 Tablespoons Alum
2 Tablespoons oil
2 1/2 cups flour
food coloring

1. Boil water.  Add food coloring.

2. Add salt to boiling water and dissolve.

3. Remove from heat and add alum and oil.

4. Stir in flour.  (You may want to begin with 2c. and slowly add more as needed)

5. Knead until smooth.  Playdough will be very hot at this point! 

6. Let cool and store in a ziplock bag.

 

 

 Silly Putty

Elmer's Glue
Liquid Starch

* * * * * * * * * * * * *

1. Mix equal parts of liquid starch and Elmer's glue in a bowl. 
      (I usually use 1 cup of each)

2. Add food coloring. 

3. Mix well.  It can take up to 20 minutes of mixing to get the ingredients     incorporated. 

4. Store in a ziplock bag in the refrigerator.

 

Playdough #2
(cooked version)

1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 Tablespoon oil
1 cup water

1. Combine dry ingredients in a saucepan.

2. Add oil and water.

3. Stir over medium heat until it forms a ball.  Do not overcook!

4. Knead until smooth.  Playdough will be very hot at this point!

5. Let cool and store in a ziplock bag.

 

Cinnamon Ornaments

1 cup cinnamon
3/4 cup applesauce
2-3 Tablespoons white glue

1. Mix ingredients well, until it forms a dough.

2. Flatten the dough to 1/4 inch thick. (dough will be quite dry and can be tricky to work with)

3. Use cookie cutters to cut shapes.

4. Use a drinking straw to punch a hole in the top if planning to hang.

5. Keep flat and move to a warm dry place for 48 hours.

6. Turn ornaments every few hours to dry on both sides.

7. Alternatively, put in a warm (not hot) oven for several hours.
