Writing is a developmental
process. Our goals for third grade are:
1. Provide the opportunity to develop fluency in writing.
2. Introduce and apply appropriate thinking skills.
3. Provide the opportunity to
demonstrate an ability to use a variety of writing
forms.
4. Introduce the elements of plot and character for imaginative
writing.
In third grade we use a combination of Write On Track, A Handbook for Young Thinkers, and Learners and the Houghton Mifflin Practice Book.
For the students to be successful writers, they need to
learn the mechanics and usage of words and punctuation marks. Here are a
few of the general topics:
The Sentence-Subjects and Predicates
Nouns, Pronouns, Verbs, Adjectives-Check out FunBrain/Grammar

Capitalization and Punctuation
Homonyms and Homophones
The Process of Writing
Prewriting and Drafting
Revising, Conferencing, and Editing

Writing Stories, Tales, Letters, and Plays
Writing Poems
The use of "Daily Edits" has proved to be very beneficial for the students and teachers. This program has been instrumental in the students' success on standardized writing assignments.
The students will learn how to locate and remember important information by learning and practicing the following:
1. Using a Glossary or a Dictionary
2. Using the Table of Contents and Index
3. Using the Encyclopedia
4. Locating Information Graphically
5. Summarizing Information Graphically
6. Using the KWL and SQRR Strategies
7. Identifying Good Web Sites
