UNIT OVERVIEW

There are various kinds of matter, each with specific properties.  Matter may change forms when exposed to thermal energy or when combined with other types of matter.  Some changes in matter are reversible, and some are not.  These chapters focus on the Ohio Academic Content Standards for Science Grade-Level Indicators for Science and Technology, Scientific Inquiry, and Scientific Ways of Knowing.

CHAPTER 5 - MATTER AND ITS PROPERTIES

Mass, volume, solubility, and density are basic properties of matter.  These properties depend directly on the structure and arrangement of the particles that make up matter.  At the end of this chapter, students should be able to answer the following questions:  How can physical properties be used to identify matter?  How does matter change states?  and What are mixtures and solutions?

Vocabulary Review ch. 5

CHAPTER 6 - CHANGES IN MATTER

The units of matter can be classified by their properties.  Matter can be combined, separated, and chemically altered.  At the end of this chapter, students should be able to answer the following questions:  What is matter made of?  What are physical changes in matter?  and How does matter react chemically?
