UNIT OVERVIEW Plants grow and reproduce in various ways. Plant structures have developed with specific functions that enable plants to survive. Plants are a source of energy that is part of a greater chain of interdependence in ecosystems. These chapters also focus on the Ohio Academic Content Standards for Science Grade-Level Indicators for Science and Technology, Scientific Inquiry, and Scientific Ways of Knowing.
CHAPTER 3 - PLANTS Plants can be classified by their characteristics and life cycles. Many plants that exist today are similar to plants that existed long ago. At the end of this chapter, students should be able to answer the following questions: What are some plant types? How do plants grow? CHAPTER 4 - ECOSYSTEMS AND ENERGY An ecosystem is the interaction among the parts of an environment. Plants use energy from the sun to make their food. Animals get energy and nutrients by eating plants and other animals. All living things have basic needs. At the end of this chapter, students should be able to answer the following questions: What are the parts of an ecosystem? What factors influence ecosystems? What are the roles of living things? and How do living things get energy?
