Current Events – Social Studies

One way to become a well informed citizen is by discussing what is currently happening in the world and in our community.  This year students will participate in weekly current events discussions and study the impact events have on our lives now and for the future.

We will use Scholastic News magazine as a springboard for our weekly current events discussion.  Parents are encouraged to discuss current events with their children and students are encouraged to read other newspapers, magazines, and visit news web sites to learn more about what is happening in the world.

Extra Credit

Students may, at any time, bring in a current event news article of interest and present it to the class.  Students should have a copy of the article and write a short summary of the article discussing the who, what, why, when, and where of the article.  Students should also include a sentence explaining what they think about the event discussed in the article.  This will count as extra social studies credit.  Students may take advantage of this extra credit opportunity up to four times per quarter.
