CLASSROOM POLICIES

The intent of the Mariemont Junior High Band Department is to provide the members of the Junior High Band with a well-rounded band experience. The hope is that this will be accomplished through the rehearsal and performance of a wide variety of band compositions representing different musical styles, forms, composers, and cultures. Every effort is made to provide an atmosphere in which the band members feel free to develop their talent and creativity in a safe, secure, and an enjoyable manner. With this in mind, the following classroom rules and policies should be observed:

1. Always display good manners.

2. Take care of your music and your folder.

3. Take care of your instrument and keep it in good working condition.

4. Keep rehearsal areas neat.

5. Come prepared to all rehearsals with instrument, music, accessories, and a pencil.

6. Rehearsals start promptly as soon as the tardy bell rings. Plan to arrive before the tardy bell rings and be prepared to start rehearsal on time.

7. Make up all missed schoolwork.

8. All school rules in the Mariemont Junior High School Student Handbook apply.

9. No food, gum, drinks, hats, or toys are allowed during rehearsals, concerts, and at any time we ride a school bus in connection with a band activity.

10. Off-limits areas include the director's desk, file cabinets (one exception being the drawer with percussion equipment), blackboard, and instruments that do not belong to you, especially the percussion equipment.

11. Students are expected to respect all areas of practice and performance. Any students who destroy property will be dealt with on the administrative level.

GRADING POLICY

Each band member's quarterly grade will be determined by a point system that takes into consideration several different areas:

1. Class Participation - each class will be assigned a value of 10 points. In order to earn 10 points for each class (rehearsal), all materials needed to participate in the rehearsal must be available. This includes the instrument and the music. Also, each band member should have a pencil (not a pen) in his/her instrument case in order to write special instructions, fingerings, rhythms, etc. on the music.

2. Proper posture and playing position - value of 100 points per quarter

3. Proper rehearsal etiquette - maintain self-discipline/self-control throughout each rehearsal; listen attentively to the band director's instructions; do not talk or play instrument while the band director is talking; etc. A simple way to express this is: cooperate with each other, do not compete.
Value of 100 points per quarter

4. Preparation for class - consistently perform up to level of ability; evidence of home practice when necessary in order to learn assigned part; etc.
Value of 100 points per quarter

5. Playing tests and music theory/music history worksheets - these may be assigned from time to time and will be assigned point values as would homework in an academic subject area.

6. Attendance at all performances is mandatory. Our performances are comparable to major tests in academic subject areas. Each performance will be assigned a value of 200 points. Performances include: Junior High Band Night at MHS Football Game (usually in September); Junior High Holiday Concert (December); Junior High Winter Concert (February/March); and Junior High Night of the Arts (May).

If a band member is absent from a performance and the absence is excused (illness; family emergency, etc.), he/she will have the opportunity to make up the performance (test) by writing a report. The report topic and due date will be assigned and determined by the band director. The report topic will be relevant to the music that was performed, or it may involve research on a band composer, the history of one's instrument, a major performer on one's instrument, etc. If the report is not turned in on or before the due date, the absence becomes unexcused and the student will earn 0 points for the performance.

If a band member is absent from a performance and the absence is unexcused, he/she will not have the opportunity to make up the performance (test) and will receive 0 points for the performance.
