Junior High Student Wins Art Critic Award

Junior High Student Wins Art Critic Award

Mariemont Junior High School 8th grade student Ellie Poindexter recently received an Honorable Mention in the Jerry Tollifson Art Criticism Open, sponsored by the Ohio Art Education Association, for her essay on Fountain Square Pantomime by Joseph Henry Sharp.

Ellie wrote the essay as part of the "Be the Art Critic" expedition, which was co-created by art teacher Shelley Komrska and English teacher Leslie Jordan.

“Congratulations and commendations on the first-rate students and teachers of Mariemont Junior High School,” wrote Missy Higgins-Linder, the Jerry Tollifson Art Criticism Chair for the OAEA. "On behalf of the OAEA board, I congratulate you for supporting…the sharp observation skills, lively imaginations, and thoughtful writing…in your students. We hope that exploring, enjoying and thinking about great works of art becomes an enriching, lifelong practice for each of them.”

Ellie will receive a certificate of award and her essay will be displayed as part of the 2015 Youth Art Month Exhibition, on view through March 31. Her award-winning essay will also be featured on the OAEA website. The Youth Art Month Awards Recognition Ceremony is on Saturday, March 5, 2016 in Columbus, Ohio.
