Mariemont High School alumni Dave Grob was recently published by Smithsonian Books for the book he co-authored, titled “Game Worn: Baseball Treasures from the Game's Greatest Heroes and Moments,” about game-worn baseball memorabilia.
Grob was born and raised in Fairfax, although he did not attend school in the district until high school. “In high school I was below average student – by effort – who enjoyed sports and had little expectation of going to college,” said Dave. “After graduation in 1982, I worked for the Village of Fairfax maintenance department for a year, and during that year I reflected hard on something that Mr. J.C. Brandenberg, a former math teacher of mine, had posted in his section of the math pod. It was a sign that read ‘Time Wasted Can Never Be Recovered.’ It struck me equally hard that I had wasted four years of high school and had not made the most of the outstanding educational opportunity that Mariemont High School offered. I vowed never to waste my time again, and I like to think I have made good on that in both my personal and private life.”
Now a husband, father and retired Lieutenant Colonel for the U.S. Army, Grob was commissioned as an Infantry Officer and Distinguished Military Graduate from the University of Cincinnati in 1987. Grob was deployed for Operation Desert Shield and Dessert Storm, and he has served all over the world, from Korea to Kentucky.
Although now retired, Grob is currently serving as a Department of the Army Civilian in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Intelligence in the capacity of senior strategic planner and integrator for the Army’s Foreign Disclosure Branch. He has received numerous awards and decorations for his service to the United States.
As noted in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Dave Grob is a baseball memorabilia researcher. He is a collector of and an authority on vintage uniforms and equipment. The Smithsonian refers to Dave as “the nation's foremost authenticator of vintage major league baseball uniforms.”
According to the Smithsonian, “Game Worn” is “the ultimate baseball coffee-table gift book of the season...It is a richly illustrated exploration and first-of-its-kind compendium study of the world's most coveted and precious baseball uniforms worn by Major League ballplayers during the twentieth century. This coffee-table book features many of the most historically significant uniforms, jackets, hats, as well as other treasured baseball collectibles that tell us as much about the history and soul of America as they do about the game and the players.” Click here for more information or to purchase “Game Worn.”
