Strengthening Programs and Student Learning Through Strong, Sustained Business Partnerships

MHS students Drew Fiorenza and Anthony DiMichele spend time at the National Exemplar, selling the Mariemont Discount Card to patrons and community members alike.

For the second year, the High School of Business students at Mariemont High School have increased their project-based learning skills in marketing with the help of local business partnerships by producing the Mariemont Discount Card.

Lisa Hopkins, manager of the National Exemplar, introduced the project to the Mariemont High School DECA advisor and helped provide local business resources as well as funding and selling opportunities for the students. Marketing activities the students performed in creating their Mariemont Discount Card include business-to-business selling, design layout, pricing, production, shipping and personal selling.

Local businesses agreed to offer a 10% discount to their establishment for the entire year - January 1 through December 1. The students priced the card at $10 and began selling the card at the high school’s Holiday Fair in December. Students have also set up a pop-up shop, selling the discount card in the lobby of the National Exemplar. Proceeds from the card help to fund the business students’ DECA Club activities, including involvement in DECA state and international competitions.

Local businesses on the card include: Jules & Bing!, Mariemont Inn, Penn Station (Red Bank), sara benjamin’s, the National Exemplar, Worthy Yoga, Mac’s Pizza Pub, Rooted Juicery & Kitchen, and Roosters Men’s Grooming Center. A few cards remain, so if you would like to purchase a card to support student learning in business, please contact the club advisor, Debra Baas.

The High School of Business program is offered through the partnership of Great Oaks Career Campuses and the Mariemont City School District.
