Mariemont High School TSA TEAMS Qualify for National Competition

Two of the Mariemont High School TSA TEAMS qualified for the national competition this summer, a first for the high school. The A team also took first place in the region and state and 6th in the nation for Division III schools, which have graduating classes between 100-150 students.

“This is impressive that our students are truly the top for a major component of the competition,” said Jeff Radloff, Mariemont High School science teacher. “When all schools, regardless of size or whether they are public or private, are put together, we still finished 6th place out of 655 teams. That’s quite a feat.”

According to the Technology Student Association (TSA) website, TEAMS is an annual competition that gives students an opportunity to discover engineering and how knowledge in engineering can help make a difference in the world. Students work collaboratively to solve real-world engineering challenges, applying their math and science skills in practical, creative ways.

Team A included Mike Barrett, Will Hobart, Nick Huber, Eli Koreman, Gabe Koreman, Matthew Teeters, Logan Urbanski and Shea Wells. Team B included Cohen Bailey, Eli Bales, Amanda Lewis, Jack Mathis, Scott Overbey, Ben Phelan, Michael Reber and Emma Worple. The 9th/10th grade team included Jack Barnes, Jaxie Brokamp, Celia Caesar, Will Henning, Harrison Keith, Sydney Seeger, Colton Urbanski and William Weston.

Since 2000, Mr. Radloff leads a group of students at the regional competition at the University of Cincinnati, which limits how many teams each school is able to bring. The competition theme this year was “Engineering the Tools of Innovation.”

Students applied and then were selected to be on teams through their science classes. A team consists of eight students. This year, there were two 11th/12th grade teams (one from Honors Physics and one from AP Physics C) and one 9th/10th grade team (predominately from Honors Chemistry classes). The students begin preparations in January with different scenarios that focus on topics around the competition theme.
