Description:
This course is designed to provide the student with an introduction to the study of psychology. Topics to be covered include: influence of biology on behavior, human capacities of thinking, learning and communication, motivation, emotion, and mental health. Students are required to read a number of scholarly articles related to the field of psychology and review them critically. Attempts are made to apply the material covered to specific situations in everyday living and to provide a clearer understanding of our own behavior and the motivations of those around us.

Welcome! This semester long course will emphasize the major themes of Psychology. It will include the basic theories and content of Psych as well as the evolution of the field.

Academic Expectations
Students will become familiar with basic behaviors and schools of thought regarding behavior.
Students will explore the different career options in the field of Psychology.
Students will study and understand how behavior differs across cultures.
Students will become familiar with ground-breaking experiments, studies, theories, etc. that have shaped the field.
Students will explore Psychology through available technology.

Class Structure
Grades will be established using a total point system. However, there will be some assignments that are heavily weighted and will greatly impact your grade (i.e. research project). Your grade will be determined by the following:

  • Notes-We will take notes on a regular basis.

  • Tests- You will have tests throughout the semester, usually at the end of each chapter. You will also have a final exam.

  • Article Reviews- A portion of this grade will come from your reviews (3) of various articles that deal with the field of Psychology.

  • Homework- Turn it in on time and completed. (Approximately 2x/week)

  • Participation- In Psychology there will be a lot of discussion. It is very important that you participate. That means voicing your opinions, actively listening to others, getting involved in group work, answering questions in class, etc.
