MHS 2008-2009

String Orchestra students at MHS will be graded on the following criteria:

  1. Daily Preparation & Participation (10 %) – Each student will receive 100 points on Monday of Each week.  Points will be deducted daily for the following:

v  Forgetting instrument (-20), music or book (-15), or equipment (-10)

v  Lack of participation in class

v  Lack of attention in class

v  Being late for class (-20):  Students must be in the orchestra room when the bell rings.  They must be in their seats with their instruments out, quiet and ready to be tuned 2 minutes after the bell rings.

NOTE:
String Orchestra Class is Bell 6 this year.  Students will not be allowed to leave the class to use the restroom during any part of the orchestra class.  All students need to take care of using the restroom during their lunch period prior to our class or between classes.  Tardies will be assessed.

  1. Recorded time practicing at home (10%) - Practice times will vary according to repertoire being prepared, individual preparedness and playing test scores.  Practice times must be submitted via E-MAIL ONLY by midnight on MONDAY of each week.  E-mail addresses for the student OR parent must be provided to me the FIRST week of school.  Students must choose ONE e-mail from which all homework and practice sheets will be submitted through the year.  This ensures my ability to search for past assignments if necessary.  If assignments are being sent from multiple e-mails, they are difficult to locate.  Students are required to notify me concerning a permanent e-mail change before assignments are due.  No credit for LATE sheets.  Late = 0!

  2. Homework, In-Class Assignments & Quizzes (10%) – Homework will be kept to a minimum.  However, an occasional assignment will be given.

  1. Daily Performance (30%) – Each student will receive 100 points on Monday of each week.  Points will be deducted for the following:  Poor position, poor posture, inability to perform the daily assignment at and acceptable level, failure to strive to improve identified weak areas, failure to reach playing goals that have been set & failure to implement instruction.

  1. Concerts, performances, written tests and playing tests (30%) – students will receive a numerical score on all tests.  ALL Concerts and performances are mandatory.  Specific criteria for playing tests will be communicated to the students at least one week prior to each test.  All OMEA events (see attached music schedule) are mandatory and fall under the performance category.  Certain after-school and evening rehearsals are also required.

  1. Attitude, Effort, Musicianship, Cooperation and Leadership (10%) – clean-up and tear down of rehearsals and performances, instrument, accessory & music care, respect for classmates and teacher, attentiveness, teamwork and a positive attitude.

  1. Extra Credit (minimal) is available to students who attend outside creative and performing arts events, participate in playing for the community, churches, gigs, outside ensembles or orchestras.  Extra Credit will be applied to Areas 1 & 5 ONLY of the grades.  Points will not be added to final grade averages and will not have an effect on AREA 2 unless it is for private lessons.
