Reading Strategies
8th Language Arts
As you read, you should keep active reading notes.
The following steps will help you understand the material.
Please come to me if you have any specific questions.
1.
Mark or Highlight:
Write down important quotes, events or happenings.
2.
Question:
As you read, ask yourself questions and/or make a list of things that you don’t
understand. Then bring these with
you when we have class discussions or see me personally.
Clarify:
If you don’t understand some part of your reading, go back and read it again!
Again, ask questions!!
3.
Visualize:
As you read, try to imagine what the writer was trying to do with this piece of
writing. Imagine what the
characters, setting and situations must have been like or what they are like.
4.
Predict:
Make some predictions. What will
happen next??
5.
React and Connect:
Try to connect some aspect of the reading to your own life.
This will make it more meaningful and interesting!
6.
Create a character chart.
Leave enough room so you can add on as the section progresses.
List characteristics of each character, quotes etc…
7. Write a
summary for each section.
Include Who? What? When? Where? Why?
