GABY DOWNEY: Gaby Downey played basketball at Forest Park High School and helped lead her team to the 1984 AAA State Championship and a 28-0 record. She was named MVP of the tournament and Cincinnati Player of the Year. She went on to play at Miami University, where she got her teaching degree in social studies and master’s in coaching behavior. In 1990, the Miami women’s basketball team won the MAC Championship and Coach Downey was named MVP and Miami University Scholar Athlete of the Year. She is a member of both Forest Park’s and Miami’s athletic Hall of Fame. Coach Downey has coached varsity basketball teams at Madison H.S., Badin H.S, Milford H.S. and Ursuline H.S. She was named GMC Coach of the Year in 1996. She currently teaches at Milford H.S. and resides in Blue Ash with her husband Jack Kinsinger and their children Noah, 10, and Isabel, 6 and Joseph, 2. Downey is now in her first year as the head varsity coach at Mariemont.
JEN HROVAT: Jen Hrovat played basketball through all four year of high school at Milford, three years of which were under the direction of head coach Gaby Downey. Jen played forward for the Ohio Northern University Polar Bears for four years. She stayed with the Northern program for a 5th year as a student assistant for coach Michelle Durand. Hrovat is in her first season leading the girls’ JV basketball team.
JEFF WATERSON: Jeff Watterson is in his 6th year as Assistant Head Coach. He served as the Athletic Director for Mariemont for 10 years, and was the Varsity Girl's Head Coach from 1989-1994. He has a BA from Marietta College and a Masters of Education from Xavier University. He and his wife Gail live in Anderson; they have two sons, Rob and Brad.
JOHN WEILBACHER: John Weilbacher is a graduate of Mariemont High School class of 1989. He earned 6 varsity letters while attending Mariemont in basketball, baseball, and football. This is his 4th year coaching in the Mariemont girl's basketball program and 3rd year coaching the 8th grade girls (last year he coached as assistant Varsity girl's coach). He is the director of the "Cincy Swish", a non profit girls AAU/select basketball program. He also runs the "Swish Spirit" which is a youth special needs basketball team. He is the proud husband of Tara and dad of Morgan, 13, Emma, 12, and Olivia, 10. He has lived in Mariemont most of his life and now resides in Fairfax.
MIKE POPE: Mike Pope is the third generation from his family to graduate from Mariemont High School. He still holds the record for the most points scored in a single game, set in 1965. He attended Cornell University where he played Varsity basketball. Mike began coaching youth basketball in 1978. He has coached at the junior high level as well as recreational and AAU basketball. Mike led his Clark Montessori team to a city championship win and was named Junior High Coach of the Year for the Cincinnati Public School League. He and his wife Kay reside in Terrace Park. Last year and years before he was the JV coach and is now the 7th grade girls coach.
