Coach Kevin Maness

This will be the start of my 13th year coaching the Mariemont High School Swimming Team.  I began swimming at the age of 6 at Fairfax Swim Club.  I swam for MHS all four years and graduated in 1989.  My swimming career continued at Hiram College where I was MVP all 4 years, captured 7 OAC league titles and was named Male Swimmer of the Year in 1991.  Over the course of the last 12 years, I have been named league coach of the year 13 times by my peers and Southwest District coach of the year 2 times.  I also coached the Mariemont summer team for 15 years.

Prior To Practicing

The following forms must be turned in to the Athletic Director (Tom Nerl) prior to the first practice.  Failure to turn in these forms results in the inability to participate in practices.  These practices will be counted as unexcused.

ü      Physical Form

ü      Packet Forms

·        Athletic Registration

·        Warning of Injury

·        Extra-curricular Release

ü      Emergency Medical Form (already on file with office)

ü      Student Handbook Form (already on file with office)

Varsity Letter

To earn a varsity letter, the swimmer must attain the following criteria:

Have  90% Practice Attendance

The only excused absences are when a swimmer is not at school or when a swimmer and his/her family are out of town.  Attendance will be marked as following: green = present, yellow = excused, red = unexcused.  It is believed that all practices should be attended.  I allow for this 10% for any unforeseen conflicts.  Please do not take advantage of this 10% simply because your percentage is higher than 90.

Participate In The CHL League Championships

This is one of the most important meets of the season and should be treated as such.  If illness occurs, it is the parent’s responsibility to contact Kevin and discuss the issue.

Be In Good Standing With The Team

Swimmers should be in good standing with the coaching staff and teammates.  Swimmers should be a positive influence for the team rather than a negative one. A positive attitude should be demonstrated at all times.  No ejection may have taken place over the course of the season.  A new area for ejection this year is for jewelry.  No swimmers may have any jewelry (earrings, necklaces, watches, bracelets, string bracelets, stretchy bracelets…) of any kind.

Meets

All swimmers are expected to abide by the following guidelines for meets:

ü      Arrive and be ready at scheduled time.

ü      Remove all jewelry prior to entering pool area!!!

ü      Wear team suit and cap.

ü      Wear team warm-ups and parkas.

ü      Wear only Mariemont attire on deck (only team attire or blue/gold attire).

ü      Remain on deck to support teammates until last Mariemont swimmer has exited the water.

ü      Represent Mariemont with dignity.

ü      When a bus in needed, all swimmers will ride the bus to the meet wearing team warm-ups and parkas.  A swimmer may only ride home from a meet with his/her own parent (no exceptions) once the parent has signed Kevin’s sign out sheet.

Sectionals, Districts and State

Once we reach the end of the season, the state tournament meets have limited entries per event.  Each school may enter 4 entries per individual event as well as only 1 relay for each relay event.  Participation in the Sectional line up will be based on the swimmer’s ability to advance to the next level, times attained throughout the season, as well as work ethic demonstrated at practices.

Captains

Any Senior or Junior who wishes to apply for a captains position will need to fill out the Captain’s Application Form and return it to Kevin.  Captains will be chosen according to answers given, past participation on team, attitude displayed in previous seasons and work ethic.  Team size determines how many captains are needed.

Grades

All swimmers are expected to maintain the highest grade point average they can.  Our history dictates that swimmers have attained a high level of academic standards.  Most, if not all, swimmers have been awarded the CHL Academic Letter at the awards banquet.  It’s up to you to keep this tradition going!  Practices during exam week will be different.  Please consult the calendar for training times.  It is a good idea to take a break from studying to give your mind a rest and refresh your body with a workout.

Weights and Dry Land

The team will use the time from 3:50 – 4:25 each day for either weights or dry land exercises.  Weights will be M-W-F and dry land will be T-Th.  The schedule may change as needed.  All swimmers are expected to have appropriate attire for weights and dry land (t-shirt, shorts or sweat pants, gym shoes, no jewelry).

Lockers

Lockers are available for swimmers to keep his/her equipment in on a daily basis.  Locks may be obtained from Kevin.  This will prevent any items from being stolen or tampered with.  It will also ensure that your equipment is readily available (goggles, cap, dry land clothes and shoes).

Trainer

Mariemont is fortunate to have the services of  Liz Ebbeler MS, ATC.  Chris will be available from after school until 6:00 on most days.  No swimmer may enter the training room unsupervised.  Please see Kevin prior to consulting with Liz.  Being in the training room does not count as attending practice!

Parent Information

A swimmer’s progress is enhanced if there is a healthy relationship between the swimmers, coaches and parents.  Here are a few suggestions to help make the team the best it can be:

Ø      Volunteer to work at meets.

Ø      Stay informed of team happenings, meets and events.

Ø      Support the team and all of its members.

Ø      Be positive toward your child’s swimming and his/her coach.  If a problem arises, please discuss it with the coach.

Ø      Ask questions.  If there are items you do not understand, be sure to ask the coaching staff.

Ø      Let the coaching staff do the coaching.  They are professionals and should be respected as such.

Ø      Never argue with an official at a meet.  Let the coaching staff handle any and all problems.

The only time that it is not appropriate to confer with the coaching staff is when they are on deck coaching…be it at practice or a meet.  That time is dedicated to the swimmers.
