Quarter One Project -- Build a Cell!!

You are challenged to build a plant or animal cell model using your creativity and imagination.  This is to be a 3-D project using whatever different objects you like to represent each part of the cell listed below.  The challenge is to find objects that look like the parts they are to represent so that your finished project is recognizable as a cell, and parts are recognizable as the parts of the cell.  You will supply a key for the model (do NOT make your key larger than 15" x 18"...you need to plan ahead), and describe the function of each part.  For example, the nucleus should be built with a "nuclear envelope" around something representing the nucleolus (dense area) and chromatin (thread-like) so the nucleus looks like it has all three parts.  Pores in the nuclear envelope need to be represented in some manner.  Think through the structure and function of the cell parts to come up with ideas.  Parents are great resources, and will have suggestions and material ideas.  I will "brainstorm" with you AFTER SCHOOL if you get stuck.  If we do a good job, we will display these models for everyone to admire.  If it is edible, we will be sure to eat it!

 Here are the specific requirements.

Date Due _________________________

Your model must include the following for full credit:

1.  TITLE:  A Model of a(n) Plant/Animal Cell
2.  A KEY showing each structure and its representation, as well as its function, no larger than 15" x 18"
3.  Your Name and Bell prominently displayed on your key
4.  A different object or color for each structure
5.  Similarity between the structure and its representation should be apparent
6.  The following structures should be included:
     A.  Nucleus, which consists of:
Nuclear Envelope
Chromatin
Nucleolus
     B.  Cytoplasm, which contains:
Ribosomes
  Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
  Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
Golgi Bodies
Vacuoles
Lysosomes
  Mitochondria
Plastids (only in plants, one of the plastids is a chloroplast)
Cytoskeletal structures-microtubules and microfilaments
  Centrioles (animals only)
     C.  Plasma Membrane
     D.  Cell Wall (only in plants)
7.  Points will be distributed as follows:

                                    maximum points (100)/ points earned

model submitted on time 10/
model title, name label, appropriate size of key 10/
appropriate, obvious key with cell functions 40/
appropriate construction of model 30/
neatness, attractive artistic rendition, quality (includes the key and definitions)

10/

TOTAL   100/

It's a cell world after all.........
