- Greek membership has declined
30% in the past decade. Here are a few reasons
why: reputation and reality of initiation ceremonies and/or excessive
drinking, the additional cost to the college experience, plenty of
activities on campus without them (i.e. Purdue University has 600 organized
student groups). National offices of fraternities are trying to clean
up the hazing and drinking, but local chapters are hard to audit.1
- In 1999, tuition rose 4.6% in
private colleges, 3.4% in public colleges. That rate is slower
than in some years. 1991-92 was the highest increase in recent years.1
- Enrollment in college is growing!
From 8,004,000 in 1969 to 14,881,000 in 1999. Projected enrollment in
2009 is over 16,000,000.1

of today's college students are frequent binge drinkers. (Binge drinkers are
defined as those who have consumed at least five drinks in a row one time
during a two-week period.) Frequent binge drinkers binge three times
in a two-week period.1
- Great grades? or grade
inflation? When college students were
asked how they did in high school, 34% said they had an "A"
average and 12% said they had a "C" average. In 1960, 12.5%
reported they had A's and 32.5% said they had C's.1
- Student aid...the
proportion of student aid not based on need stands at 16.8%. In 1982
it was 9%.
- Grim Statistics about acceptances...This
might be a good year to think about those good schools that aren't so
selective. Last spring was brutal for applicants: Univ.
of Pennsylvania accepted 22%, down from 31%. Harvard
accepted only about 11%, yet half of their applicants had 1400 SAT's and 16
% of their applicants ranked first in their high school class. Columbia
and Brown accepted around 15%.1
- Average graduation rates
in 1998: Graduating in 4 years: 47% in private colleges, 23% in
publics. Graduating in 5 years: 60% in private colleges, 45% in
publics. Graduating in 6 years: 62% in private colleges, 51% in
publics.2
- Twenty-Seven percent of
Ohio private college students are from outside Ohio. (1999) 2
- Seventy-two percent of
first year students at Ohio private colleges receive financial aid, and the
average aid award is worth $13,482. (1999)
- Over 65% of students expect to be
more successful than their parents 3
- Two-thirds of financial aid is need
based.
- Sixty percent of aid is in the form
of loans.
- One half of students graduating from
college have outstanding loans averaging $12,000.
