Basic Foods

Course Credit: 1/2 credit, 5 periods/week, one semester

Description:

The course will teach the student how to cook the following foods for health and wellness:1)fruits and vegetables,2)quick breads 3)Cheese dishes and Milk based smoothies.  In addition, students will study nutrition, kitchen safety, food sanitation and the scientific cooking principles.

Creative Foods

Grade Level: 9,10,11,12

Course Credit:1/2 credit, 5 periods/week,

                        one semester

Description:

The student will learn how to use creative methods of food preparation for the following foods: 1)appetizers,2)meat dishes, 3) fruit and vegetable salads, 4) Egg based dishes,5)French, Mexican, German and Oriental dishes.  Methods of selection, storage and food preservation will be a part of developing good meal management service techniques.  Units covering the food market industry, diet patterns and various cultures of the world will be studied.

Gourmet Foods

Grade Level: 9,10,11,12

Course Credit: 1/2 credit, 5 periods/week, one semester

Description;

Gourmet Foods is designed to meet the needs of students who have mastered the basic techniques of cooking.  The course will involve the students in more complex concepts in meal planning and special preparation techniques.  Food plays an important part in our lives. It is important that we learn to serve nutritious, attractive and economical food.  Nutritional benefits of foods and selection of those items which meet health needs will be presented with a variety of lifestyle cooking.  Cultural, social and aesthetic values of food will be explored.  Advanced techniques in food preparation will be practiced.

Apparel Design and Construction 

Grade Level: 9,10,11,12

Course Credit: 1/2 credit, 5 periods/week, one semester

Description:

This course is designed to meet the needs o9f students who wnt to master the basic techniques of apparel construction.  The student will learn to use a sewing machine.  students will develop skills needed for basic apparel design by selecting and altering a pattern.  Methods of apparel construction will be developed through the use of sewing vocabulary  through the use of a pattern guide sheet.

Prerequisite: None

Fee: $25.00 plus cost of major supplies (25.00-50.00)

        Student: This class is the the introduction to cooking at MHS and you can learn about taking care of yourself with healthy food, what types of food are good, how to store it, and how to cook it. In basic foods we cook every Friday and we make our presentations every Wednesday.
