Introduction to Business

Course Description: 

This course is designed to provide an understanding of the role of business in our society and what our relationship is to business. An introduction to business will help foster an understanding of the world of business and to help prepare students for a more meaningful and beneficial interaction with business.  Second semester covers financial issues; the UC Stock Market Game will be incorporated in the investing unit.

Course Objectives:

  • To develop a comprehensive picture of business in its economic setting.
  • To develop an ability to use a general, business, and economic vocabulary.
  • To become a more intelligent consumer of goods and services.
  • To become aware of different business careers.
  • To become aware of savings, investing, credit, insurance, budgeting concepts, supply and demand, and global/international issues

Materials/Text: 

Intro to Business, 5th Edition, Eggland, Dlabay, and Burrow, Southwestern Publishing Co., 2004.  A single subject notebook and two-pocket folder is required.

Assignments/Homework: 

New material will always be covered prior to any suggested reading or activity/exercise. It is strongly suggested that you take legible notes. At the end of new material introduction, you should read and review the material just covered. After reading and reviewing the material, you will be completing end-of-chapter activities, some of which will be completed with a partner or in a group, in class and some as homework. These activities should be submitted to your teacher with your name on each activity. We shall discuss the responses at the beginning of the next session. Following each chapter will be a quiz; after each unit a test. Please retain the activities/exercises and quizzes as they will prove beneficial when studying for unit tests and final semester exam.

Grading:

  • In-Class Activities -- 25 points
  • Homework -- 25 points
  • Surprise Book Checks -- 10 points
  • Chapter Quizzes -- 100 points
  • Unit Tests -- 200 points
