Course Description:

This semester course focuses on the student's role as citizen, student, family member, consumer and active participant in the business world.  Students will discover ways to maximize their earning potential, develop strategies for managing their resources, explore skills for the wise use of credit, and gain insight into the different ways of investing money. 

Classes will participate in CNBCs on-line stock market and mutual fund competitions.

Materials/Text:

Managing Your Personal Finances, 5th Edition, Joan S. Ryan, Thomson South-Western, 2006.  A single subject notebook and two-pocket folder is required.

Assignments/Homework:

New material will always be covered prior to any suggested reading or activity/exercise.  It is strongly suggested that you take legible notes.  At the end of new material introduction, you should read and review the material just covered.  After reading and reviewing the material, you will be completing end-of chapter activities, some of which will be completed with a partner or in a group, in class and some out of class.  These activities should be submitted to Mrs. Baas with your name on each activity.  Following each chapter will be a test.  Please retain the activities/exercises and quizzes as they will prove beneficial when studying for the semester exam.

Grading:

  • In-Class Activities -- 25 points
  • Homework -- 25 points
  • Chapter Tests -- 100 points
  • Projects/Simulations -- 200 points
  • Book Checks -- 10 points each time
