It's About Tradition: Scott Hamlin

Scott Hamlin (Alumnus - Class of 1979)

Leadership is a tradition at Mariemont City Schools, and Mariemont High School alumnus Scott Hamlin is a leader in everything that he does. As former Chief Operating Officer for Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and current Senior Vice President at Christ Hospital, Scott knows the importance of being a good leader.

Scott credits his success to the support he received from the faculty at Mariemont High School. One teacher in particular – John Hubbard – taught him that luck is where opportunity meets preparation. Mr. Hubbard taught an accounting class at Mariemont High School, which Scott believes might be one of the first of its kind. It was Mr. Hubbard that encouraged Scott to major in business and drove him to the admissions office at the University of Cincinnati, where Scott eventually graduated cum laude. He came from a working-class family where going to college wasn’t the tradition. The support of this teacher was the genesis of his career.

Scott also credits his success to the preparation and communication skills he learned in high school. The ability to prepare a written document and speak in front of a group of people is critically important to one’s success in the workplace. “If you can’t express it, then you can’t lead others. It would be much easier to list the things that didn’t impact my career from my experience in this school district. You cannot speak to what a great school this is, without also speaking to how great the community is as well. People know you by name and have a real interest in you. That structure and support comes right into school. Mariemont City Schools is one of the best-kept secrets in not only Cincinnati but in the state and beyond. Expectations of the school are enormous in a district like this and the community will not stop at anything less than excellence.”

Scott has been a leader in community outreach, volunteering with the USA Cincinnati Regional Chamber of Commerce, Convalescent Hospital for Children, Camp Joy, Ronald McDonald House, Armstrong United Methodist Chapel and the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens.
